The UN s special adviser on Myanmar Vijay Nambiar has ended a brief visit to the country s Rakhine state the scene of bloody violence between ethnic communities that has left around 21 people dead according to state media.\nDuring the visit he met with state officials. \nHe left via the airport at the regional capital Sittwe but declined to comment to reporters. \nHeavy rain has brought an uneasy peace to the area which is now under emergency rule. \nTensions between ethnic Rakhine Buddhists and stateless Rohingya Muslims is long-standing. \nThe current violence was triggered by the rape and murder of a Buddhist woman allegedly by three Muslim men and the June 3 lynching of 10 Muslims in apparent retaliation. \nMyanmar considers Rohingyas to be illegal immigrants from Bangladesh and denies them citizenship. \nBangladesh says Rohingyas have been living in Myanmar for centuries and should be recognised there as citizens.
