arrow right A Stupid Question

This is a stupid question but it has to be asked.Does your sales letter create as many sales as you would like? What proportion of them respond to your advert? What is just as important, how many of those that responded actually purchased your product? How can you improve the response rate? How many new email addresses did you capture?Do you have an 'opt in' strategy so that you can mail them later with more offers without being accused of spamming?Let us look at the sales letter first. The headline.Does it stand out? Does it grab your attention?Does it shout,

arrow right Positioning for Profits!

Last Friday, I was spending one last day of freedom with a dear friend who was expecting to have her first baby at any minute. We decided to hang out by the pool.On the way there, we stopped to pick up some lunch to eat pool-side. Given the choice of Wendy's, Subway, or McDonald's, I chose Subway because I knew I could get a relatively low-calorie, low-fat lunch there. How did I know that? Because I'd seen their commercials starring Jared who had lost something like 150 pounds by eating an all-Subway-sandwich diet. Now, I don't need to lose 150 pounds, and I don't plan to go on an all-Subway-sandwich diet. However, I also didn't want to blow the 648 calories I had burned on the elliptical trainer that morning. From the moment we walked in, I knew I had made the right decision. They had a poster-sized sign telling me how many calories and grams of fat each of their basic sandwiches have. That helped me make a decision about the best thing to order. Then, they reinforced my smart decision when they handed me my sandwich-drink combo. Plastered across the sandwich wrapper, around my cup, and over my napkin were the same calorie/fat breakdowns. I was pleased to see that I was only eating 320 calories for lunch (okay, truth be told, I splurged on chips too). But, nonetheless, Subway had done their job and done it well.I'm talking about POSITIONING. They might be a lot of things, but the thing they want you to know above all else is that they offer low-calorie fast food alternatives. Yes, they were fast. Yes, they were cheap. But the point they have hammered home with their advertisements, in-store signage, and paper goods is that I can get a meal that won't blow my diet.Positioning is what sets you apart from your competitors. It's what makes a prospect choose to work with you rather than someone else. It's the part of perception that you have the most control over. But many business owners neglect to take charge of their position in the marketplace and let customers position their business for them. How many times have you lowered your prices to get a new client who balked at your original bid? How many times have you agreed to provide a certain service to a client that you never planned to provide, don't enjoy doing, and isn't very profitable? How many times have you taken on a job that requires the most basic skills you possess and complained that you can't get clients that want to use all of your talents? These are all things that business owners experience when they let their prospects/clients position their business for them. If you find yourself doing this, the time to change is NOW!Are you letting the market position your business for you? If so, don't fret. Most all of us have been there at some time or another. Sometimes, it's important to take on low-end jobs. We all need to pay the bills. We all experience market downturns. We all have to build up confidence in our services. But, if you find yourself feeling frustrated with the type of work you're doing, the amount of money you're making, or the kind of clients you are working with, it's time to take charge of your business.Take a piece of paper and write down 5-10 things you want people to think of when they think of your business. Here are several examples, but you might think of many more:low pricefast servicehigh qualitypersonal servicecaring attitudeexpert adviceemotional supporttechnical expertiseimmediate resultscreative ideasNow, look through your list and choose the one thing that you want to emphasize more than any other ? the one thing that will set you apart from your competitors.Once you've selected it, write down a list of benefits that the one thing provides to your clients. For example, if you chose "high quality" from the list above, some benefits might include:you make them look good to their employees/employer/clientsyou help projects stay on track because your work is good enough the first time and requires no changes/editsyou allow them to take one thing completely off their plate because your work meets their standards without their direct involvementOnce you've identified the aspect of your business that you want to emphasize and you've identified the benefits to your clients, sit down with all of your marketing materials. This includes your business card, brochure, letterhead, web site, advertisements, bio sheet, etc. Determine how you can tweak each one to emphasize this aspect of your business. If you can afford it, you might reprint some of your materials. If you can't, you might come up with ways to add a tag line to your existing materials. You could print your tag line at the bottom of every piece of letterhead each time you are sending a letter. You could have stickers printed with your tag line to stick on each of your brochures. Be creative! The best part about proper positioning is that you end up doing the type of work you enjoy and making more money. Many times the work is more profitable -- you are able to charge more than your competitors because you are delivering more value than they do. The clients that choose to work with you are making the decision to pay a little more in order to benefit from the extra value you provide.About The AuthorKimberly Stevens is the author of the ebook series, *The Profitable Business Owner: A Step-by-Step System for Starting & Running a Successful Service Business*. arrow right Start Your Sales Engine!

Does your business run on a sales engine or a sales effort? A sales effort is something that has to be done every time you want to make a sale. But, a sales engine is something that, once put into place, can bring you sale after sale without added effort. Here are a couple of examples ?A photographer gets to know a handful of bridal consultants that refer every new bride they meet to him. Each time they get a new client, he has the opportunity to get a phone call from that bride without having lifted a finger.A home cleaning company establishes a relationship with organizations that provide temporary corporate housing for companies with newly relocated employees. The temporary housing companies contact the cleaning company each time they have a person vacate one of their units so they can prepare it for the next resident. Since the nature of the residences is temporary, they have a continual need for cleaning services. In both of these examples, instead of spending valuable (potentially billable) work time on marketing, these companies are earning money. And during the time they do spend on marketing, they are focused on developing long-term relationships with sources of continual referral instead of tracking down each individual purchaser. In the cleaning company example, they could be running classified ads, taking calls, visiting individual homes to provide cleaning estimates, etc. But all that effort only results in one job. There is an opportunity to clean each temporary residence 3-4 times per year. Multiply that figure by the number of units the temporary housing company manages, and you've got some regular business rolling in. And all from one relationship. Now, that's a sales engine! In the case of the photographer, the service is not being performed for the bridal consultants. It's being performed for their clients. So, rather than being a repeat-service relationship, it is a referral relationship. However, it is not reciprocal. By the time the photographer hears from brides, they have already started planning the other elements of their wedding, so it's too late to refer them to the bridal consultants he knows. But, he could reward the bridal consultants with a referral fee that he creates by either discounting his services when dealing with those brides they refer to him or by marking his services up by 15%.Despite all the stories you hear, most business owners are honest people who have the desire to treat their customers fairly. In the case of the photographer, the bridal consultants provide the brides with a list of photographers that they can choose from. This allows the bride to make her own decision based on quality/price rather than being pushed into a relationship with a particular photographer.Would you prefer to invest your time in building a relationship that brings you sale after sale or one that brings you a one-shot sale? It's not magic. It's not a get-rich quick scheme. It's a simple key to business success. So, the question is .. are you going to spend this afternoon pitching one account that could lead to one job or building a relationship that could lead to several jobs? Don't get me wrong -- it can take more than an afternoon to establish the most ideal relationships. But, in more cases than not, it's no more difficult to form this one relationship than it is to form any other.Start your sales engine!About The AuthorKimberly Stevens is the author of the ebook series, *The Profitable Business Owner: A Step-by-Step System for Starting & Running a Successful Service Business*. arrow right Get More Clients Now!

Although David has been a graphic designer for a decade, he's only been a business owner for a little over a year. He was becoming increasingly discouraged with his clientele. "I'm the only person in the business, and even though I've been in business for a whole year, I'm still having to spend a lot of time marketing to get new clients. And the ones I do get usually only have one small project for me for the entire year. To top it off, I don't even get to do the kind of work I really enjoy They all just want the basic logo, business card, letterhead job. I really want to work on full-scale marketing campaigns where I'm designing print ads, direct mailers & media kits. How do I get more of the right clients?"As you are discovering, David, building a stable of long-term clients with needs that match your interests can be a time-consuming and ongoing effort, but it's worth it in the long run. It's up to you to build a company that attracts clients with higher-end needs. You can't blame the small businesses for whom you are likely working for having a small budget and basic needs. As a sole proprietor, you can certainly understand working on a restricted budget. So the first thing you need to do is to focus on how you want to position your company in the marketplace. What types of work do you want to do for clients? Do you want to avoid business card layout all together or will you do it if it's for a client who does or will have larger needs in the future? Do you want to develop a niche in which you specialize in doing full-scale marketing campaigns within a specific industry, such as restaurants or high-tech companies? You get the idea - begin by determining what type of work you want. The world of graphic design is big and broad, so it's your job to narrow your focus which will make your company more attractive to potential clients in that field because you spend more time working on projects similar to theirs as compared to a jack-of-all-trades graphic designer.Next, you need to make sure that everything you use to present your company to the marketplace reflects your new positioning. This may mean revising the content of your web site and brochures and re-wording the tagline on your business card. If you don't already have a tag line that you splatter on all of your collateral materials, create one. This is a terrific positioning tool. And, as a graphic designer, you know that you can impact the image someone gets of your company through the design of your company's materials. Do you want to present your company as high-tech, friendly and affordable, or hip and cutting edge? Create a consistent image across the board on everything a prospect would see when encountering your business. If you want to do full-scale marketing campaigns, start with your own. Enlist the help of a designer friend or marketing friend if you tend to have trouble applying your designer brilliance to your own company as many of us do.Once you know how you want to position your company in the marketplace and you have updated all of your materials, the only thing left to do is present yourself to the people who want what you have to sell. This may be a very different group of people than the ones you've spent the last year with. Many of us cut our marketing teeth at the local chamber of commerce, but they can be full of small, one-person businesses that may not have the need for the services you want to provide. The best thing to do is to identify what types of companies are going to be attracted to what you are providing. Are they of a certain size, a certain geographic location, a certain industry? Once you've identified the parameters, it's time to determine how you are going to reach them. What associations do they belong to? Can you write articles for that association's newsletter? What networking groups do they attend? Can you join? Do they usually find their vendors from advertisements, referrals, or direct mail? Who else already provides services to them that could potentially provide you an opening into the companies in exchange for a finder's fee or reciprocity (these are called Centers of Influence)? Develop contacts with marketing companies who could potentially bring you in as a subcontractor for their clients' marketing campaigns. Although, they will generally take a cut or mark up your services, perhaps, you'd enjoy focusing on building these relationships so in the future you could focus just on the graphic design aspect of your business, not the client-building part. This may seem like you are starting from ground zero as you pull away from those groups that you've been networking with during the past year and begin again as a new member in new groups, but soon you will be reaping the rewards of a thriving business working with people you like and doing what you want to do. What could be better?Once you've established yourself in these new communities, you can't continue to spend half of your week trolling for new clients or you'll cap your income in relatively short order. Your next line of attack should be meeting some Centers of Influence. arrow right Want to Make More Money? Fish in a Bigger Pond!

Setting prices is a dilemma most service business owners encounter at one time or another. This week, it was Susan's turn. "When I first started my business, I felt uncomfortable charging for my services. Since I was doing it to make a living, I finally just picked a price I thought wouldn't scare too many people away. Now, based on my available work hours, I can't really take on more clients but at the rate I'm charging them, I'm not going to make enough money to keep the business alive. How do I raise my prices without losing my clients?" she wanted to know. For whatever reason, it is uncomfortable for many of us to look a person in the face and state our hourly rate or the cost of a project they want us to complete for them. This is usually rooted in our fear of rejection. We think, 'What if the prospect gasps and falls out of his chair convulsing on the floor?' or 'What if he snorts with disdain or launches into uncontrollable laughter?' At the beginning, we really need the work and generally decide we'd rather start getting some clients to build our reputation and skills, thinking we'll charge a rate we know they'll accept. Besides, we can always raise our prices later. Well, now is

In the day-to-day operation of an online business we can sometimes lose sight of what we want to achieve as opposed to how we actually go about achieving it. Most peoples understanding of customer acquistion stops at this point. One of the key factors in getting a customer to buy (literally) into what you're selling is engagement. arrow right How To Write A Killer Sales Letter

I sit down and look at my notebook. Then, I put myself into the 'zone'.That's how I start to write web copy that sells.Whether you agree with me or not, your web copy will determine whether your product's going to sell online or not.Simple reason. In an offline sales pitch or presentation, you get to interact with your prospect. You get to touch him. He gets to see you personally. But not online. No, no, no. It all depends on the words on your site. See how powerful words are?I'm not saying I'm a guru at web copy. There are many other copywriters who are far better than me. Many. But I've written my own web copy and it's selling. And at the same time, I've been hired to write for others.Keep on reading on how I write killer web copy and you can pick up any of the tips. The first part to write a copy, you MUST be in the 'zone'.What the heck is the 'zone'? The 'zone' is like? the mood. You see, writing a great copy is like an artist painting a beautiful picture. When you are in the 'zone', your hand can't stop typing and your mind keeps on coming up with amazing ideas to write.Like, I'm in the 'zone' when I write this article. How to be in the 'zone'? I'm not sure how you can achieve that, but for me, I put in a lot of passion to write a killer copy and I look into the future to see how this copy will sell like crazy. That's how I get into the 'zone'.Once you are in the zone, keep on writing. Don't stop. Even though, you know you are writing wrong grammar or putting in weird ideas. Just keep on writing. Then, after it's finished, read it all over again. This time, you'll pick up the mistakes and you'll add in more ideas. Continue doing this until you are satisfied with your work. Finally, edit your work. When you start your copy, your headline is one of the most important parts of the copy. Some copy writers write tons of headlines before they start. For me, I'll write about 5 headlines and read it over several times. Then, I'll pick the best and fine tune it at least 5-10 times before I decide to use it.One more part of writing copy; don't feel bad 'borrowing' some ideas from successful copy you've seen.Get a swipe file of the best copy you can find. And the last thing you need to keep in mind when writing a killer copy is this:"What's the end result the reader will get if they buy from you?"Your copy MUST sell hope and benefits to the reader if you want them to buy anything after reading your copy. Now go write your killer copy. All the best.Warmest regards,Patric 'High-Speed Marketing' Chan Chief Marketing StrategistCopyright 2004 Patric ChanAbout The AuthorPatric works with world-class internet marketing gurus to build successful online businesses. Dear Friend,You #1 weapon in advertising will always be...Superior Salesmanship.I am not a born salesman. If you know my story, I didn't even have a word of the English language on my lips when I first moved to North America. (Even now, my spoken English is not all that great and it comes with an accent that would put Arnold Schwarzenegger or Jackie Chan to shame.)No, I wasn't born to sell. arrow right Sell Yourself - Sell Anything!

Each of us sells every single day. We are all sales people. How well we sell directly affects our lifestyles, friendships, and family life.Professional sales people spend their entire careers consciously selling products and services. They attend sales trainings and seminars. They listen to motivational tapes and CDs in the cars to stay optimistic in the face of the inevitable continuous stream of 'Nos' every salesperson hears daily.Selling is the world's oldest profession. It is in your blood, and you know how to do it. Follow just a few simple steps and rules to selling, and considerably improve your life and your relationships. My definition of a sale is the connection between a buyer's needs and a seller's benefit. This sounds basic and it is. Using this definition, what is the process for a easy-to-make sale?1. The seller must know the buyer's needs. 2. The buyer must believe his needs are completely fulfilled by the seller's benefits. In a perfect world, if #1 and #2 are met, there is a sale. Why is it not a perfect world? Here are common problems in a sale.1. The buyer, much less the seller, truly knows his own needs. He may think he knows, and the seller may believe this erroneous thinking. To sell anything, all sellers must practice the art of questions. Good sales people ask questions until the buyer's pain is discovered. Since all buying is emotional, discovering pain or problems usually also uncovers the buyer's true needs.2. The seller does not know, and/or does not communicate to the buyer the benefits that answer the needs of the buyer. Unless the buyer clearly understands the benefits of service or product he is purchasing will solve the need, there will always be doubt about the sale. Many times the seller knows the feature of their product or service, but not the benefit. For instance if I were selling a fireman's charity ticket to a friend I would not say

arrow right Sell Without Feeling Like A Used Car Salesman

Many business owners and professionals are appalled at the thought of having to sell their products or services. If you are going to be successful though, regardless of your profession, you are also going to be in the business of selling. But you don't have to don a plaid jacket and adopt the sales techniques that have made the used car salesman infamous. If we are uncomfortable "selling" our services, it is generally because we are trying to "sell" before someone has reached the purchase stage of the buying process. While selling may never be the favorite part of your job, by implementing a systematic process you can move potential clients into the purchase phase and increase your comfort level and success with selling.Imagine that you were in the market to purchase a big screen TV. You had visited a couple of stores to see what was available, done some research on the internet, talked with friends, and narrowed the choice down to 3 models. Now you have a few questions you need answered to help you make your decision. You go to the appliance superstore, a salesperson approaches you as you enter the department and asks if she can be of help. She asks you a few questions about where you plan to put it, your budget, and what the primary use will be. She answers your questions and helps you decide on the model that is best for you. Not only are you not put off by the salesperson, you would have been upset if there would not have been a salesperson to help you.Contrast this with a situation where you are visiting an appliance superstore with a friend. You decide to go check out the big screen TVs because you've been thinking about getting one. The same salesperson approaches you and asks if she can help you. You say, "No thanks I'm just browsing." As if she hadn't heard your reply, she starts asking you the same questions as in the scenario above. However, this time you find the questions annoying and the sales person pushy. The difference in these two scenarios is simply your position in the buying process. How would it have been different if instead of insisting on asking you a series of questions she had simply given you an article re-print from Consumer Reports and a list of 10 questions to consider before purchasing a big screen TV with the store's name, her name and telephone number at the bottom? The process people go through in making a buying decision is:? Phase 1: Awareness and Knowledge? Phase 2: Liking and Preference? Phase 3: Conviction and PurchaseThe only people you should try to sell your products or services to are those people in the conviction and purchase phase. The problem is many businesses do not implement the necessary steps to move prospective clients to Phase 3 so they are constantly trying to sell to prospects that are in Phase 1.Think about it like this, you and your products or services are standing at the edge of a chasm on Mount Everest. I call it the Purchase Chasm?. Your potential customers are on the other side. Your job is to get those prospects to cross the chasm on a flimsy aluminum ladder, one step at a time and ultimately purchase your services. At this stage your objective is simply to get them to take that first step out onto the ladder, followed by another until they reach the ultimate decision to purchase. You don't push, manipulate or cajole them into purchasing. You simply serve as a guide providing information and assistance through the process. So how can you begin to move your potential customers across the Purchase Chasm??Step 1 - Awareness and Knowledge: Before someone can purchase your product or service they must be aware of it. They must also be able to picture in their minds the problems the service will solve for them. And that picture must be enticing enough to motivate them to take that first step. At this phase your objective is to make your potential customers aware of your services and give them knowledge about the benefits they will gain from working with you. This is generally done through activities where you can reach a large number of people at one time. A major goal at this stage is to collect contact information so you can continue to provide information to help these prospective clients move across the Purchase Chasm?.Step 2 - Liking and Preference: Awareness alone is not enough. Potential customers must also have a positive disposition regarding your services. During this phase it is important to maintain consistent contact. Consistency builds credibility. You also want to let prospective clients "sample" your service in order to minimize the perceived risk of purchase. You can do this by sending out a regular newsletter (e-mail or hardcopy); sending out a monthly tip related to the service you provide; offering free or low cost introductory trainings; participating in selected networking events on a regular basis; and offering teleclasses. The important thing is that you are consistently in contact with these potential clients. After all, you don't want to leave them out on the middle of the ladder over a deep chasm without a guide.Step 3 - Conviction and Purchase: The final step in the process is getting those potential customers who have begun the journey across the chasm to actually make the decision to purchase. Now it is time to sell. And if you have developed a relationship with the potential client throughout their journey, this step should be as simple as reaching out to take their hand as they reach the end of the ladder, reassuring them they have made the right decision by embarking on the journey and asking when they would like to get started. At this point, it is critical that you ask them for their business. If you don't, they will wonder why you had them take the journey. They'll feel like the person in the appliance superstore who is ready to make a purchase and can't find a salesperson. It may take as many as five to 15 exposures to your product or service for a potential client to move through the process and cross the Purchase Chasm? from lead to loyal customer. The key is to build those exposures so each one matches the level of the process where the potential customer currently is (i.e. direct mass media activities to potential customers in the awareness phase and use personal selling with prospects in the conviction and purchase phase).Writing, speaking and networking are activities that many coaches and consultants enjoy. By systematically using these activities as marketing tools you reduce the time you actually have to spend selling, you focus your selling activities to people who are actually ready to buy, and it becomes a natural ending to the relationship building process.© 2004 STRATEGIES-BY-DESIGN. arrow right 7 Safety Tips Every Realtor and Door-to-Door Sales Professional Need to Pra

These are the top 7 safety tips that criminals don't want you to know. It makes their job harder. What makes a criminal pounce? Intent and Opportunity. Their intent we have no control over, however we definitely can do something about the opportunity. Start thinking like a criminal. How would someone be able to take advantage of you? What throughout your day can put you at the peak time for a criminal to "come in for the kill"?1. When meeting a client for the first time, have them go to your office or a public establishment.2. If meeting a potential client at their home, try to bring another colleague with you. Remember, there is always safety in numbers. If you are traveling alone, scope out as you walk towards a clients house where doors are in the house in case a quick getaway is needed.3. Wearing expensive jewelry makes you a big target. Leave your jewelry at home or locked in your vehicle. Ladies, your spouses will understand.4. Keep your cell phone clipped to you at all times. This allows you to call the office or a family member on a moments notice.5. If you are driving a client in your vehicle, make them ride in the passenger seat, not the back of the vehicle. You want to keep your eye on them. Having a client sit in the backseat because your paperwork is in the front leaves you very vulnerable.6. Keep your keys with you readily available, in a pocket of your pants or jacket or even in your hand. They can be used as a defensive weapon if necessary.7. And remember always - ALWAYS trust your gut instincts!!! If something doesn't seem right or you have a funny feeling about a client, Get out of there! Make another appointment. Bring someone with you next time you meet. Tell them your cell phone is vibrating and you need to take the call. ANYTHING that will deter them enough for you to get to a safer location. And remember this? CRIMINALS LIE! They will tell you anything you want to hear. Don't trust them. Don't believe them. They will say anything to convince you otherwise. Be pleasant to your prospective clients, but keep your guard up.About The AuthorMichelle Annese specializes in self-defense for adults and children, in Waynesboro, Virginia, USA. arrow right The Processionary Caterpillar Syndrome Costs You Sales?

Some years ago I read and interesting story that illustrated why many of the sales and service industry professionals that invest their time and money in my personal telephone coaching sessions ( http://www.TheSellingEdge.com/personalCoaching.htm ) have until the coaching sessions have failed to move beyond an intellectual understanding of sound selling principles. Do you have the processionary caterpillar syndrome? The renowned French Naturalist, Jean-Henri Fabre, in an experiment with processionary caterpillars was able to entice them on to the rim of a large flowerpot. Processionary caterpillars move through the forest in a long procession feeding on pine needles. They derive their name from their habit of following a lead caterpillar, each with its eyes half closed and head fitted snugly against the rear end of the preceding caterpillar.Fabre succeeded in getting the lead caterpillar to connect up with the last one, creating a complete circle, which moved around the pot in a never ending procession. He thought that after a few circles of the pot, the caterpillars would discover their predicament or tire of their endless progression and move off in another direction. But they never varied their movements.Through force of habit, the caterpillars kept moving relentlessly around the pot at about the same pace for a period of seven days. They would have continued even longer if they had not stopped from sheer exhaustion and hunger. As part of the experiment, food had been placed close by in sight of the group, but because it was out of the path of the circle, they continued in their procession to what could have been their ultimate destruction. In their procession around the pot, they were blindly following their instincts, habits, past experience, tradition, custom and precedent-the way they always had done things. In reality, they got nowhere. As the adage states, "It is a form of insanity to do the same things over and over and then expect different results."Like the caterpillars, many sales and service industry professionals mistake daily activity for accomplishment, working hard for working smart. In my coaching sessions we use self-directed learning manuals and weekly discussions about proven selling techniques and systems to help participants change their behavior and selling activities so they can sell more products or services. To change your sales behavior you need a plan and a program to move to a new level of sales excellence like the system we use to help our clients change their sales activities.VIRDEN THORNTON is the founder and President of The $elling Edge®, Inc. a firm specializing in sales, customer relations, and management training and development. arrow right Turning Sales Techniques Into Sales Success!

The goal of all sales training is not just to teach solid selling principles and techniques, but to actually help participants increase the number of new accounts (products and/or services) they sell and improve their multiple sales ratios. Unfortunately, many sales and service industry professionals gain an intellectual awareness of the methods of selling from the sales training they receive, yet fail to improve their bottom line sales results by systematically using the concepts in their daily transactions. See my article, The Processionary Caterpillar Syndrome Costs You Sales? There are a number of methods you can use to move beyond an intellectual awareness of sound sales techniques. By applying some of these ideas, you can begin to see a steady improvement in the number and scope of your sales transactions. These concepts can help any sales professional drill-for-skill the vital selling principles needed to become a sales leader. Really all it takes to be successful in sales is just a little practice and perseverance.Give Yourself Permission To SucceedTo become a sales leader in any kind of business only requires that you give yourself permission to succeed. In sales, as in every endeavor in life, it is your attitude not your attributes that count. There is no reason you can not be extremely successful at selling your company's products and services, if you make up your mind to do the job.William James, a Harvard Professor and the man many view as the father of American Psychology, wrote in 1895:"The greatest discovery of my generation is, that a human being can alter his circumstances in life by altering his attitude of mind."James also gave people a formula for achieving an altered attitude of mind. He simply told them to "act as if" they were already successful and this act alone could make them successful. If you act as if you have changed or act like a different person, according to James, you must change or become a different person. If a sales professional acts as if she can sell, her sales ratios and product account closings can do nothing but improve.By releasing your "inner brakes" and seeing yourself using the sales and customer service techniques you have learned, you can become extremely successful in your efforts to sell your company's products and services. If you want to consistently produce multiple sales transactions, just let yourself go and you will start to see the success you are seeking. You have the right to be successful. The only thing that can stop your improvement and ultimate success is yourself. Tell yourself that it is all right to produce outstanding sales results; and then, begin envisioning the success you expect to achieve.Use Affirmations To Produce SuccessTo help you consistently execute the sales techniques you have learned, use affirmations to change the way you think and perform. Affirmations can also help release your internal breaking system. We gravitate to our dominant thought patterns. By using affirmations ("I can," "I am," etc.), you can create dominant thoughts about specific sales methods that will help you to move away from your fears (the fear of failure or of looking foolish) toward successful sales transactions. Write down a series of positive affirmations about the sales process or a specific technique. Then read them over until you create the dominant thought patterns that produce success. As we teach in all of our Sales Success workshops and discuss in detail in our published training material, it is vital to your sales success that you regularly affirm your selling skills and visualize successful transactions using the techniques you have learned. To succeed you must see yourself as one of your company's top sales producers by regularly performing mental dress rehearsals for the position.Repeat The Technique Until It Is YoursAs you are taught new sales techniques you need to practice them on the job as well as in your mind, until you can use them in each transaction without even thinking about their use. We call this level of sales proficiency "unconscious competence."Many sales professionals, try a new sales approach only once or twice before rejecting it out of hand or deciding that it will not work for them. True professionals; however, diligently practice a new sales concept until they can execute it without even thinking about it. This approach (going beyond an intellectual knowledge of a sales method) sets top producers apart and can be seen in their extraordinary closing and multiple sales success. It is also quite noticeable in their pay checks as well!Role-playing at each new sales technique with a co-worker is a powerful way to gain the ability to consistently use these concepts on the job. Remember; however, that practice does not make perfect. Only "perfect practice" makes perfect. So as you practice with other employees, try to be as accurate as you can in the execution of a given sales concept.Set aside some time each working day to drill in the sales concepts you have been taught. Take them one at a time and master each one. It might surprise you how much more you will enjoy coming to work when you become truly proficient in building sales and long term customer relationships for your company.Saturate Your MindSaturate your mind with sales and motivational materials. As you do this, you will move from an intellectual understanding of the sales techniques to a daily working knowledge of the methods you need to succeed, and you will have more than just an occasional thought about what you are trying to accomplish. What is needed to help you change your behavior is a constant positive saturation of your mind by reading over the materials you have been given or the notes you have taken on the subject. In his tapes, The Psychology of Selling, Brian Tracy tells his listeners that one of the best methods to increase sales success is to read then reread one of the best books on sales for 30 minutes each day. He feels this type of saturation will have a tremendous impact on the sales activity of an individual. Research from Stanford University indicates that you can learn more from reading the same book six times than you can from reading 40 books on the same subject.Work Smarter Not HarderOutstanding sales results come to those sales professionals who correctly follow and apply sound sales principles. They won't do the work for you but they will lighten your load and give you an edge. All it takes to be successful at selling your company's products is to want to improve the way you perform, see yourself using new selling techniques, give yourself permission to use the concepts and regularly practice them until they become second nature.VIRDEN THORNTON is the founder and President of The $elling Edge®, Inc. a firm specializing in sales, customer relations, and management training and development.
