Streusel-Filled Sourdough Cake1/2 cup sourdough starter3/4 cup granulated sugar1/2 cup shortening1 egg1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour1/2 teaspoon baking powder1/2 teaspoon salt1/2 cup milkStreusel1/2 cup brown sugar, firmly packed2 tablespoons all-purpose flour2 teaspoons  cinnamon2 tablespoons butter, melted1/2 cup chopped nutsPreheat oven to 375 degrees F. Grease and flour a 9-inch square pan.Measure out sourdough starter.In a separate non-reactive bowl cream together sugar, shortening and egg. Add to sourdough starter along with milk, flour, baking powder and salt. Mix well. Spread half of the batter in prepared pan. Sprinkle batter with half of the Streusel mixture. Add remaining batter and sprinkle remaining Streusel over top. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes or until done.

Sourdough Squash Brownies1/2 cup vegetable shortening 1 1/4 cups granulated sugar 2 eggs, beaten 1/2 cup sourdough starter 2/3 cup winter squash, pumpkin (cooked and mashed) or raw zucchini, peeled and grated 1 teaspoon vanilla extract1/4 cup milk 1 cup all-purpose flour  1 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg 1/2 teaspoon ginger 1/2 cup chopped nutsCream shortening and sugar. Beat in eggs, sourdough starter and squash in that order. Stir in vanilla extract and milk.Mix and sift dry ingredients and stir into creamed mixture; stir in chopped nuts. Pour into greased baking pan and bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes or until well browned.

Sourdough Sopapillas1 cup sourdough starter 1 cup all-purpose flour 3/4 teaspoon salt 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder 2 tablespoons shorteningCooking oil for fryingMeasure starter into a large bowl. Mix dry ingredients together. Cut in shortening until mixture resembles  cornmeal. Add starter mixture to dry ingredients. Stir quickly with a fork to moisten dry ingredients. Turn out onto lightly floured surface and knead until smooth, adding small amounts of flour as needed. Cover with clean cloth and let dough rest for 5 minutes.Roll dough out into a 12 x 15-inch rectangle about 1/8 to 1/4-inch thick. Cut into 3-inch squares or triangles.Drop a few pieces at a time into deep, hot cooking oil at 400 degrees F (205 degrees C). Fry about 2 minutes on each side or until golden brown. Sopapillas will puff up like pillows. Drain on paper towels.Serve warm with honey and confectioners' sugar or cinnamon and sugar. Or you can serve as an entree topped with chile verde or chile colorado.

Strawberry Sourdough Bread1 1/2 cups all purpose flour1 1/2 cups strawberries, sliced1/2 teaspoon baking soda3/4 cup granulated sugar2 eggs1 cup walnuts, chopped3/4 cup sourdough starterPreheat oven to 350 degrees F. Butter and lightly flour an 8 1/2 x 4 1/2-inch loaf  pan.In a large bowl lightly beat the eggs. Mix in the oil and sugar, and sourdough. Add the flour and baking soda. Stir until flour is just blended.Fold in the strawberries and walnuts. Do not over-blend or the bread may be tough.Pour the batter into pan and bake on center rack in oven for 1 hour and 20 minutes until an inserted wooden pick comes out clean. Turn out onto wire rack to cool. Cut and serve.

Let cool.Place the nuts in a blender or a food processor and process until finely ground. Add the butter and brandy or liqueur, if desired. Process until just combined. DO NOT OVER-PROCESS, or the butter will heat up and separate. Form into a log or pack into a crock. Store covered in the refrigerator until serving.

Slowly cook onions, garlic and rosemary stirring until softened.In a food processor, blend the onion mixture, great northern beans, white wine vinegar, red pepper and salt until smooth.Transfer to a medium baking dish and garnish with paprika. Bake uncovered for 25 minutes, or until hot and bubbly.

Using a sharp knife, carefully slice off top (about 1 inch) , from top of cheese ball. Scoop out softened cheese and reserve. Place red wax shell in refrigerator and discard cut top piece. Using fine grater, grate reserved cheese into large bowl and continue to let stand at room temperature until very soft. Add beer, butter, celery salt, caraway seed and mustard to cheese and mix until well blended. Remove shell from refrigerator and fill with cheese mixture. Serve with crackers and vegetables.Can be stored in refrigerator in plastic wrap and foil for several weeks.

Process to fine crumbs. Remove crumbs and reserve. Repeat with remaining wafers. Add about 1 cup pretzels to food processor and process to fine crumbs to make 1/2 cup crumbs.In a large bowl, combine wafer crumbs, pretzel crumbs, confectioners' sugar, margarita concentrate and cream cheese. Add tequila and Triple Sec, if desired. Stir until blended. Divide mixture in half. Wrap each half tightly in plastic and set aside.Combine half the grated lime with decorator sugar and half with granulated sugar on small saucers or in small bowls, stirring to distribute lime peel evenly. Remove plastic from 1 portion of the dough and shape into 1-inch balls. After shaping each ball, roll each in green or white sugar. Work quickly because balls dry quickly. Repeat until all dough is used. Store in an airtight container in refrigerator up to 1 week.Makes 7 dozen.
